About Cray & Its Founder

The founder who turned red flags into a system

Justin Smith lived the story most people only read about — then spent years turning what he learned into Cray: a platform built on one conviction, that awareness is protection.

Why Cray Exists

Built from experience, not theory

Cray wasn't born in a boardroom. It came out of a relationship whose red flags were visible only in hindsight — and out of the years Justin spent afterward studying why smart, careful people miss patterns that seem obvious later. The answer, it turns out, is that in the moment, vibes drown out patterns. Feelings are loud; evidence is quiet.

"Vibes lie. Patterns don't."

So he built the thing he'd needed: a private, objective way to check what you're seeing against 70+ research-backed red flags across 18 behavior categories. That system became the Cray app, now used worldwide — and grew into campus partnerships with 15+ colleges and universities and the Cray Protected venue certification. Every piece of it exists to close the same gap: the space between feeling that something is off and seeing it clearly.

The Person Behind the Platform

Who is Justin Smith?

Justin Smith is a Tampa-based entrepreneur and the founder and CEO of Cray, the dating and relationship safety platform. He holds a BA in Multimedia Design and Development from American University and an MBA in Entrepreneurship from the University of Tampa, and spent his early career in psychological assessment publishing — a background that shaped how Cray turns behavioral patterns into measurable scores.

Today he leads Cray's consumer app, its campus partnership program spanning 15+ colleges and universities, and the Cray Protected venue certification — and speaks regularly about red flag psychology, digital dating safety, and manipulation awareness. His memoir — tracing both the story behind Cray and the events that shaped him — arrives in 2027.

Beyond Cray

The Hamburger Man of downtown Tampa

🎸 Will Valentino — “The Hamburger Man”

Every week for the last 18 months — without missing a single one — Justin has been in downtown Tampa handing out cheeseburgers, fresh fruit, and bottled water (with a flavor packet — details matter) to neighbors experiencing homelessness. No organization, no cameras — just the belief that every person deserves to be seen, heard, and made to feel special in some way, and that compassion works best as a habit, not an event. Downtown, the consistency earned him a name: Hamburger Man.

The work is personal. Justin lives with PTSD, and he feels a connection to people carrying the same kinds of mental health struggles he knows firsthand. He had the resources to help — and in showing up, week after week, he found a sense of purpose.

Tampa musician Will Valentino, one of the friends Justin has come to know downtown, put the nickname to music — a song called "Hamburger Man." It says more than any bio could.
